- NYC is nicknamed “The Big Apple” because a sport journalist in the 1920’s wrote a
newspaper column about the many horse races and racecourses in and around New
York, he referred to the substantial racetracks and big-time venues as “The Big
Apple” symbolizing the biggest and best one can achieve. The nickname did fade
away until the early 1970’s, as part of a tourism campaign to spiff up New York’s
image to the rest of the world.
